Choosing Home Appliances for a Small Flat
Compact homes have specific limits — wall space, power capacity and cooling load. Getting the size wrong wastes money on both purchase and electricity.

Air conditioners
Size an AC by room area and ceiling height, not by room name. A bedroom of about 100–120 square feet generally needs a 1-ton unit; 120–180 sq ft suits 1.5 tons. A larger unit in a small room wastes electricity and cycles on and off constantly.
- Measure the room before choosing — do not guess
- Check your electrical load supports the unit, especially on a floor above ground
- A 1.5-ton inverter unit costs noticeably less to run than a fixed-speed one
- Confirm the room has a proper drainage route for the condensate pipe
Refrigerators
Choose by family size and how often you shop. For 1–2 people a 200–250 litre unit is usually enough; 300–350 litres suits 3–4 people buying weekly. Consider a larger freezer if you buy fish or meat in bulk, and leave clearance around the unit for airflow.
- Direct current (DC) compressors are quieter and more efficient
- Check the voltage range matches your area's supply
- Leave space on the sides and top as the manual requires
Mixers and grinders
Match power to the job. Everyday smoothies and batters need around 300–500 watts; grinding spices or nuts needs 750–1000 watts. Higher wattage is not automatically better — it means a higher bill for tasks that do not need it.
Water heaters
A 50-litre storage heater suits one to two people; 80 litres suits three or four. Instant heaters are faster but cost more to run per litre at low pressure. In winter-heavy areas, an insulated storage unit usually works out cheaper.
Things that cost more than they save
- A brand-new high-capacity model when a smaller one would do the job
- Leaving an air conditioner on in a room with open windows
- Running a large fridge in a small, poorly ventilated kitchen
Before you buy
Measure the space, check your electrical capacity, and read the warranty terms — compressor and motor warranties often differ from the whole-unit warranty.
